A blue necklace
I went to an art gallery and saw an amazing blue necklace made out of fabric and feathers and big blue beads. It was way out of my price range, so I decided to try making my own blue necklace with lots of stuff on it. I went to Michael’s, my favorite place in the world lately, and walked up and down every aisle looking for blue things. I came home with all of this stuff. With all of their awesome coupons, I didn’t even spend that much money on it–and I can make hundreds of necklaces with all of it.
I bought a metal base for the necklace so I wouldn’t have to make it from scratch or worry about the clasp. And all of those awesome flowers and beads and ribbon. So I started by wrapping the ribbon around the metal base over and over again so you couldn’t see it, and I tied it off at each end. I weaved the beads through it and I sewed the feather and each of the flowers directly onto the ribbon. I spiced things up by tying a bow of white ribbon on the other side, and sewed that gorgeous blue heart bead onto it. (My mom is not a big fan of the white bow and thinks I should try it again without it. I’m welcome to other thoughts, too!)
Full disclosure: I’m not super pleased with the base because it’s a little flimsy. And the ribbon slides down the metal frame when I’m actually wearing it. So the next step will be making it again! I’ll try gluing the ribbon onto the metal frame to see if that helps. And I’d like to try making another one without the metal frame at all. But I’m pretty pleased with my first try!
